om Artin
is a photographer living in Sparkill, New York. His subjects range from
landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes to portraits, florals and still lifes. His work
is consciously in the tradition of pictorial photography. He began taking,
developing and printing images in the early 1950s.
Artin's photographs are black and white and exploit the broad range of tonality and
subtlety that the medium affords. With one exception, the photographs exhibited here were
shot on Agfa Scala film, using Rolleiflex F, Rolleiwide, and Hasselblad cameras. The
film was scanned on a Nikon 9000 scanner, processed in Photoshop, and printed on
Hahnemühle papers via Conetech Piezography, quad-tone digital black and white
printing software developed for the Epson 3000 inkjet printer. The tulips in a pewter
pitcher were photographed with a digital camera, then processed and printed in the
same way.
Artin has worked primarily in the realm of fine-art photography, though he has also
done fashion and commercial assignments for both print and the web. His studio, in
the Bel-Ans complex in Rockland County, serves additionally as his lightroom. He is
on the roster of Bruce McGaw Graphics, creating images for fine art posters sold
around the world, and has recently joined the photographic artists exhibited at the
newly established Imaging Arts gallery in Tappan, NY.
